Looking after composite bonding: 8 practical tips

By Dr Mohammad Abbasi, DMD, AFCGDent. 12 October 2026

Bonding can look beautiful, but like natural teeth it needs looking after.

  1. Go easy on stains for 48 hours. Limit tea, coffee, red wine, curry and smoking while the surface settles.
  2. Brush twice a day with a soft or electric brush and a non-abrasive fluoride toothpaste. Avoid charcoal and harsh whitening pastes.
  3. Clean between your teeth daily with floss or interdental brushes.
  4. Do not bite hard objects: nails, pens, ice or packets are common causes of chips.
  5. Cut up hard foods like crusty bread or apples.
  6. Wear a night guard if you grind. Grinding is one of the biggest risks to bonding.
  7. Rinse with water after dark drinks if you cannot brush.
  8. Keep your hygiene visits. A professional polish keeps bonding fresh, and small chips can be repaired quickly.
