Dental implants

A fixed way to replace missing teeth. A titanium implant in the jawbone supports a crown that looks and works like a natural tooth.

What is a dental implant?

A small titanium post placed in the jawbone where a tooth is missing. Once it has bonded with the bone, a custom crown (or a bridge or denture for several teeth) is fitted on top. Unlike a bridge, it does not rely on cutting down neighbouring teeth.

Am I suitable?

Most healthy adults can be considered. You need enough healthy bone and gum; if bone has been lost, grafting may be needed first. Smoking, uncontrolled diabetes and gum disease raise the risk of problems, so Dr Abbasi reviews your medical history and takes X-rays, and a 3D scan where needed.

The journey

  1. Assessment: examination, X-rays or scan, and every option for replacing the tooth, including bridges and dentures, with a written plan and cost.
  2. Placement: a minor procedure under local anaesthetic.
  3. Healing: usually two to four months while the implant integrates.
  4. Restoration: your final crown is made and fitted.

Risks and aftercare

As with any surgery there can be swelling, bruising, bleeding or infection, and rarely nerve or sinus complications. Implants can fail to integrate or develop gum and bone problems later, especially in smokers or with poor cleaning. Careful home care and regular reviews are essential.

Dental implants: common questions

Does implant surgery hurt?

It is done under local anaesthetic. Most people are sore for a few days afterwards, usually managed with over-the-counter painkillers.

How long does it take?

Typically three to six months from placement to the final crown, longer if bone grafting is needed.

How long do implants last?

With good hygiene and check-ups, many years. The crown may need replacing at some point.

What are the alternatives?

Bridges and dentures. Dr Abbasi will explain the pros and cons of each for you.
